Leave it All on The Track

Dr. Glenwright
As you enter the stadium to the roaring of the crowd, sound of the start gun firing off, coaches screaming, and the heavy breathing of the athletes after the races . At the finish line, you see this man with a banana yellow hat, a dark green Hughesville Spartan shirt, with tan cargo pants, with his watch timing all his athletes to see if they beat their personal bests with determination in his eyes. The man that has been around Hughesville, who is loving and caring for his athletes and fellow coaches, his name is Dr. Glenwright or Doc. G to most.

Doctor Glenwright has been a track coach for almost 45 years, as either a volunteer or a head coach. He's always had a love for the sport of track and coaching since he's been in college. The reason he is so passionate on being a coach is because he gets to see all 18 events, see lots of different people and see a wide variety that outdoors provides. Doc. G was also a teacher at the high school, in which he taught American history to eighth graders. The only reason he kept teaching at the high school level is because of how much he loved coaching high school students as it is a better way to meet some amazing people. Doc. G is now a retired man, who now focuses on his life as a track coach for the girl's team.

"What values do you want your athletes to take away from your coaching" Sarah curiously asked.

"Integrity, which is the most important thing I want my kids taking away from this sport." Doc. G proudly said. "i also want them to understand that value of discipline and dedication can go a long way in life."

"What is the good and the bad things that you experience while coaching?"

With a big sigh, he starts off with the bad experiences that he has to overcome as a coach, "well, seeing people get injured from either falling over a hurdle to seeing people have terrible luck and seeing that they have tried to succeed and failed due to bad luck" he sadly replied, "on the other hand, the perks of this job is that I get to see people improve and see them succeed, which is always good to see as a coach."

While Doc. G is one-of-a-kind man, who is a well-known coach for Hughesville's girls' team, he lives up to his reputation. He has had many state champions, three in which are now in the school's hall of fame. While coaching, he is very passionate with his althlete's, as you can hear him screaming during your race from a mile away. Even through a knee replacement, he always ensures us how much courage, strength we all have to push through any challenge.

Bill the Cat
As a first-time coach, his wife gave him a stuffed animal, Bill the cat, which would later be his mascot for the rest of his coaching years. Bill the cat, which was from the show, "Bloom County", which started coming to the meets in 1986 is still coming to every meet to, "Scare off the bad luck", which has worked for some. He also says that it helps him stay motivated throughout the seasons. "Some coaches have quit in the past as the paperwork and stress has driven them away, whereas I have Bill the Cat to remind me of all my successes in the past."

Although life as a track coach seems fun, it comes with its roller coaster rides of emotions, from seeing kids go to states and placing to seeing someone's dreams crushed by missing the podium by 0.01 of a second. Though all these challenges, the man with the yellow hat is standing at the finish line to hug you and say,"there's always room for improvements and time to push through." Throughout the observations, Doc. G is inspiring so many from his career as a track coach and is still pushing though each season with new and improving track stars.
